It dramatizes the early life of the famed "Painter of Light," Thomas Kinkade, specifically a pivotal Christmas in the late 1970s when his family faced losing their home in Placerville, California.

Returning home from college, a young Thomas Kinkade ( Jared Padalecki ) discovers his mother (Marcia Gay Harden) is in danger of losing their family cottage to foreclosure. Inspired and mentored by an aging, legendary artist named Glen Wessels ( Peter O'Toole ), Thomas finds his calling and begins his professional journey as a painter.
