Set in the Russian steppes around 900 A.D., the story begins when the Viking chieftain Oleg (Victor Mature) refuses to join the Tartar leader Togrul (Folco Lulli) in an attack on the Slavs. This refusal ignites a brutal cycle of vengeance:
