When Lois takes away the boys' TV privileges, Malcolm, Reese, and Dewey are left bored and looking for trouble. They convince their friend Stevie to join them in sneaking out of the house at night to visit a local carnival.

Back at home, Lois and Hal discover the boys are missing. Their search eventually leads them to the carnival grounds, paralleled by Stevie's parents, Abe and Kitty Kenarban , who are also on the hunt for their son. In a comedic subplot, the parents' car ride involves a confusing encounter near a local adult shop before they finally locate the right entrance to the fair.
